HPP Sapunchica

HPP Sapuncica is located at the foot of Pelister National Park in the village Dihovo.

For the production of electricity, hydropower plant Sapuncica uses the waters of several smaller streams and the river Sapuncica, which is the right tributary of the river Dragor and belongs to the basin of the Crna Reka.

Sapuncica hydropower plant was put into operation in 1952.

The river Sapuncica and the smaller mountain rivers Lak Potok and Stara Buka are captured by three intakes: Lak Potok, Stara Buka and Brana. The main intake is located 6,5 km upstream to the mechanical facility and it is a Tyrolean stone weir. Intake capacity is 940 l/s, while the width and height of the overflow threshold is 9,8 m and 2,1 m respectively. At a distance of about 300 m from the main intake there is the intake Stara Buka, which captures the waters from the intake Lak Potoko. From the intake water is captured in the supply channel that is about 5 km long to the water reservoir that has a capture capacity of 2000 m3. From this chamber the water is transported to the mechanical plant by pipeline with length of 1,750 m, and the elevation difference between the reservoir and the hydroelectric plant is 435 m.

The mechanical facility of the HPP is located east of the village Dihovo. Under the building there are two pools with a volume of about 7 m3 that collect water used by the turbines. The machinery room features two Pelton turbines with horizontal axis, nominal flow of 2x0.45 m3/s and a nominal speed of 1000 rpm. They drive two 3-phase synchronous generators with static excitation and rated power of 2x1,6 MW. Generator produced electricity is transmitted to 6/35 kV block transformers from where through 35 kV bus sections it is distributed through a 35 kV transmission line to Bitola, and part is transmitted to another 35/10 kV transformer from there through 10 kV transmission lines and 10/0.4 kV substations it is transmitted to consumers.

Average annual production of electricity is 11,5 GWh. Overall electricity production and management at HPP Sapuchica is automated and managed remotely or locally from the command room.

Net drop 412 m
Throughput 2x0.45 m3/s
Turbine type Pelton turbine with horizontal axis
Generator type Synchronous generator with static excitation
Installed capacity 2.9 MW
Efficiency coefficient 88%
Average annual output 11.5 GWh

The source waters on Pelister (the springs of Lak Potok), at an altitude of 1600 to 2200 m, feature diverse wildlife. Of fish, it is important to point out the presence of endemic Pelister stream trout and Pelagonija stream trout. There are also two Pelister endemic-relict ostracoda shrimp (Iliodromus peristericus).

Pelister National Park and its environment are significant for the fauna diversity too. Of large mammals, these deserve special attention: bear, deer, lynx, wolf, chamois, red deer, wild boar, squirrel and wild cat. Herpetofauna (reptiles and amphibians) on Pelister is also diverse. There is the viper - hinge (Vipera berus) and two non-venomous snakes - mountain snake (Elaphe longissima). Among the six species of lizards found in Pelister we can mention the mountain lizard (Lacerta agilis), which often can be seen in the high meadows of Pelister. In locations around the intake Brana on the river Sapuncica, the intake Stara Buka and the water reservoir, the most common are the bracken (Pteridium aquilinum), Carpinus orientalis, birch (Betula verucosa), poplar (Populus), blackberry (Rubus) and others.
